Weekly update: a hug, quilt show entries, stash report, and August goals from With Strings Attached

I've enjoyed walks nearly every day.

Top: swamp milkweed, purple coneflower, blue lobelia. Center: vervain, liatris (blazing star), red lobelia. Bottom: nodding onion, pinnate coneflower (Mexican hat), Culver's root.

Milkweed nourishes monarch caterpillars and tussock moth caterpillars.

On to quilting!

My dear Magpie friends made a two-sided hug quilt for me. It was in the mail held for me during my trip.  It began as two hugs, one for Stevens and one for me, but it turned into one.  The blocks are from the U.S., Canada, England, and Australia.

My side was assembled by Terri and Gilly ...

Midweek: stash report and OMG from With Strings Attached

I had a wonderful time at the ALA conference in Philadelphia, quilts included. That report will come in a day or two.

Rabbit, rabbit -- this pair is dressed for the occasion and posed on a quilt.  (I grabbed the photo from a Google images search. I suspect it's a Chinese-made DWR.)

I made the July block for the guild BOM to take to tonight's meeting.  It's the heart in the center surrounded by the prevous blocks in the series.

Stash report, June:

Fabric IN:  126-1/2 yards, $36.  That's .28 per yard.  Lots of rummage sale ...

Midweek: wildflowers, placemats, OMG from With Strings Attached

You can't hide from birthdays in the age of social media.  I'm grateful for all the greetings and good wishes.

Erika treated me to brunch (crepes benedict, which provided supper as well), with a cinnamon roll from the restaurant and some P.E.O. daisies.

I spent much of the afternoon in air conditioned comfort with a Zoom call and paperwork for Stevens' estate.  It is not at all like the BBC dramas where the lawyer brings everyone together and reveals the contents of the will.  In this case, there are IRS forms, new accounts to open, and ...

Midweek: orange, goals, and an inspiring quilt book from With Strings Attached

I had a delightful day Monday with my sister and our first cousin Karen who was visiting from Los Angeles.    Though our mother and her father (siblings) were very close, we cousins aren't.  We hadn't seen her since 2002. General catching-up and family stories made for lively conversation.

Orange is the color for RSC this month. I made 8 9-patch blocks for one project and I've begun a batch of Ohio Stars.  This year I'm making a wheelchair/lap quilt each month using Ohio Stars in the month's color.

The June block for the guild ...

Friday check in: wrapping up May from With Strings Attached

This was another "where did the days go?" kind of week.

I had a good two-mile walk at Pine Dunes Forest Preserve.  At the end, when I saw the car in the parking lot, I had a startlingly clear vision of Stevens half-opening the car door and waving his cane to greet me, with a big smile on his face.  (I hope those clear visions will continue for a long time.)

I made 15 potholders.  I'll take them to the silent auction at the AAUW luncheon next week.

My OMG for May was to "figure out what to do ...

Weekly update: the sew goes on from With Strings Attached

I continue to thank you all for your kind words and condolences.  Quilting is very therapeutic during stressful times.  And the endorphin rush from bargain fabric acquisition is not to be discounted.   I have recent experience with both.

Chris called to offer me several bags of fabric.  I bought a huge quantity from her a couple of years ago. She found more and for payment asked if I would make a quilt for her new great-grandson. Of course!

Her gift included bags of flannel that I have given away.  I kept this yardage.  The blue, yellow, and pink pieces in ...

Midweek: donuts and a finish from With Strings Attached

I hope that today will bring a resolution to Stevens' placement.  Thanks once again for your kind words, prayers, and support.

Yesterday was National Library Workers' Day -- "libraries work because you do."  The Zion Woman's Club delivered donuts to the staff at Zion-Benton Public Library.  ZWC was instrumental in establishing the Zion Memorial Library in 1937.  Steffi (next to me) was the bookmobile librarian, then head of youth services.  She was a trustee on the board that hired me.   She and I are the officers of the on-hiatus Friends of the Library.

Midweek: out like a lion, stash report, OMG + reading from With Strings Attached

March ended like a lion. On Monday Stevens woke up vomiting. Paramedics took him to the ER where, after many tests, they found a bowel obstruction.  No surgery required but he is still in the hospital. I visited yesterday. He perked up when he saw me.  Not sure when he will be discharged and to where.  More discussion with hospital social worker and a care consultant today.  (The hospital is in the same complex as the clinic where his doctor's office is, so his own physician has been to see him.)  Meanwhile V was so helpful. While I was ...

Weekly update: an exhibit, OMG, RSC, reading from With Strings Attached

Thank you all for your supportive comments regarding my husband.  The care home assessment was Friday.  His condition is beyond what assisted living/memory care can accommodate.  For now we are increasing in-home care (two caregivers have been recruited to help with the 6 p.m.-bedtime shift (V comes in the morning)).  We have a video visit with his doctor on Tuesday.

I was able to take time Saturday morning to see this exhibit at the Dunn Museum (part of the forest preserve district).

The oldest quilt was made in Pennsylvania in 1850 (large picture on left).  It came ...

Weekly update: an event-filled weekend, stash report, and OMG for March from With Strings Attached

The Lake County Women's Coalition held the annual Women's History Month luncheon on Saturday.  Each year the member organizations are invited to nominate a woman who exemplifies the national WHM theme.  We recognize the winners of the scholarships we award through the College of Lake County.  (I'm LCWC secretary and the rep for the Zion Woman's Club.  AAUW-Waukegan is also part of LCWC.)

ZWC's honoree Jeanne' is the media specialist for Beach Park Dist. 6.  (Her mom is my quilting friend Irene, and Irene and her other daughter joined us.) Jeanne' does a whole lot ...

Friday check in: best in show but some editing required from With Strings Attached

The annual GFWC-IL Tenth District Art Show was Wednesday.   They have used the same categories for years ranging from painting (subcategories by medium) to floral arranging to holiday decor, sculpture, paper crafts, photography, knitting/crochet -- and "wall hanging" and "embroidery, quilting, tatting."  Categories are subject to interpretation.  This year sculpture included a fused-glass panel (beautiful)  and a fabric/quilted covered flower pot (artificial flowers.  Well, I didn't make the rules.  I just followed them -- and I won!   Full confession:  I entered the only wall hanging and there two quilts and a quilted tote bag (no tatting).  But I got ...

Friday check in: it's a flimsy!! and more progress from With Strings Attached

A librarian's Valentine!

We didn't get much snow from Wednesday's storm (about 3") but now it's very, very cold. I went to Rotary yesterday morning (S stayed in) and didn't go out the rest of the day.    More snow coming this weekend.

Old Town is a flimsy!

I added a white border to stabilize the edge.  8 yards by weight.  I have an April appointment with Barb-the-quilter.

I made two placemats out of the leftovers from Lantern, the top-along for February. (See last Friday's post.)  They await binding.

Twenty Ohio Stars in this month ...

Weekly update: OMG February, placemats, and the top-along + reading from With Strings Attached

My One Monthly Goal for February is to get Old Town to the flimsy stage.  One motivation is to reclaim the design wall. :)

The Quiltville FB group has photos of many versions of the design with different colorways and different sashings or settings or borders.  I'm going to stick to the sashing as patterned but I may do something other than the checkerboard border.

I made six placemat flimsies from units in the parts department.  The tan/green/red one has been around since 2007 (gulp!). I always thought I'd piece it into a quilt back.  The one ...

Friday check in: January report from With Strings Attached

"Smile for your fan club!"

Sunshine and temperatures in the upper 30's and lower 40's were conducive to walking this week.  It was good to stretch my legs!

This is pack ice, covered in sand.

I saw four of the ornaments I hung along one of the paths in mid-December.  This one had a few remnants of its red paint.

I had a satisfying and productive month in the studio.

The Stay at Home Round Robin (SAHRR) prompt this week was half-square triangles. I have a box of batik HSTs on hand so this was an easy step ...

Midweek: 25 blocks, OMG 2025, top-a-long from With Strings Attached

All 25 Old Town blocks are assembled.  I think the design looks good this way but the sashing, which I have yet to make, kicks it up several notches.  I will persevere.

I've begun something new.

I signed up for the Top-a-long with Running Doe Quilts .  She is a designer for Villa Rosa. One pattern a month with the goal of making a flimsy.  Getting it quilted is not required.  The January pattern is Amelia .

These are big blocks -- 17" finished -- and that 8-1/2" center square called for the jumbo Kaffe flowers.

My One Monthly Goal for January ...
